"THE LATE FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE RIVER
The body of the unfortunate boy, Walter BLABER, who was drowned on Saturday week, as mentioned in our last, was discovered by Thomas STANBRIDGE, Labourer at Messrs Wood's Brewery, on the afternoon oof Tuesday, near the Southerham railway bridge. On Wednesday an inquest was held on view of the body, at the Bear Inn, Cliffe, before F H GELL, Esq., Coroner.
William HOLMWOOD, aged 10, deposed. - A little before one o'clock on the afternoon of Saturday last, a younger brother of mine and I were at play upon some beach at the bottom of Foundry-lane, close to the river. There was a barge at the spot fastened to a wharf. Whilst we were there, the deceased came running out of his father's garden and jumped upon the barge. He took hold of the rudder and attempted to turn it, but one of the ropes by which it was tied broke, and got out of his reach; the deceased fell into the river. The tide was running very strong at the time. I went immediately and called his father, who was in his garden. The moment he fell into the water he sank and came up directly; he called for his father to save him. His father ran directly and crossed the river over Mr Godlee's bridge and jumped on the barge and called out to some men who were near the place. The men procured two boats, but before they could do anything to save him he sank again. I did not see him rise any more.
After hearing evidence on the finding of the body, the Jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally drowned."

Walter was buried on 26 April 1850 at St Thomas a Becket Church in Cliffe, Lewes, East Sussex, England.600
