In 1915 he was an Acting Bombardier in the Royal Garrison Artillery and was awarded the 1914-15 Star Medal. He served in France from 17th July 1915 and in Belgium. In 1918, he was a sergeant in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was awarded the Victory and British Medals and on 29th August 1918 he was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the Field. He died on 9 April 1918 at the age of 26 in Belgium.^340,350,351 He was killed in action.
