He was christened on 25 October 1862 in All Saints' Church, East India Dock Road, Poplar, London, England.228 He lived at 46 Woolmar Street in Poplar, London, England in 1862.228 Robert lived at 23 Tetley Street in Bromley, Kent, England in 1871.60 In 1901 he was a Shipyard Labourer.229 In 1903–1911 he was a Labourer.230,231 Robert served in the Army from 22 May 1915 to 11 September 1916.232 He joined the Territorial Army (initial service number 20821), stating that he was aged 50 (he was by now at least 53). He stated that he had previously been in the army in the 1st Buffs and was now a member of the National Reserve. His medical examination on signing up stated that he was fit for duty at home provided that he was not subjected to extreme exertion or marching more than 10 miles. He was initially in the 9th and 10th Battalion, London Regiment, and transferred to the Royal Defence Corps on 29 April 1916. His final service number was 20861. He was a Private. He appears to have been a rather 'colourful' character: on 26 May 1915 he was given 7 days' punishment for "using filthy language in the Barrack Room at about 9:45 am"; on 29 March 1916 he was given 3 days' punishment for being "dirty on Guard mounting parade" and he repeated that offence and punishment on 4 July 1916. Two months later he was discharged without a pension. His Regimental Number was 1325.
In 1920 he was a Watchman.233 In 1939 he was a Retired person.227 Robert died in 1946 at the age of 87 in Essex, England.225
