On the birth of Louisa, Ann and Margaret Phoebe, James was described as a School Teacher. On subsequent births he was described as a Labourer. He was described as a Schoolmaster (deceased) at Mary Ann's wedding in 1883. James obviously had a drinking problem. A letter dated 1855 from his mother Anne to brother George Edwin, mentioned that James' father had made his will which did not include James, but that if he stopped drinking, a codicil would be added to the will whereby he also would inherit. It would appear that this was too late as within 6 months James was dead.

James was an enumerator for the 1851 census.

James BLABER and Elizabeth Ellis "Betsy" BINGHAM were married on 4 April 1836 in St Anne's Church (previously St Peter & St Mary Westout), Lewes, East Sussex, England.^22,349,350 Susan & Barry Sherlock have proved that the place of marriage was at St Anne's Church, Lewes. BVRI gives St Peter's, Chichester, which is clearly in error. They^{^22,349,350} lived at the Village in Horsted Keynes, West Sussex, England in 1851.³⁴⁶ Elizabeth Ellis "Betsy" BINGHAM²² was born about 1815 in West Hoathly, West Sussex, England.^{22,343,351,352} Between 1861 and 1871 she was a Nurse.^353,354 She lived at 3 Weston Place in Hackney, London, England in 1861.³⁵⁴ At the 1861 census, Elizabeth was a widow, and lived-in at the home of John Luttle (44) and family. Betsy lived at Oddeynes Cottage in Horsted Keynes, West Sussex, England on 2 April 1871.³⁵³ She was living with her son, James Clarke Blaber. She died by Suicide on 7 November 1871 at the age of 56 in Horsted Keynes, West Sussex, England.^355,356

DISTRESSING SUICIDE.
Mrs Elizabeth BLABER, a widow, residing at Horsted Keynes, jumped down a well on Tuesday morning about 6 o'clock. Her daughter-in-law having missed her, and seeing the well lid open, ran to it and called out. The old lady answered, "I am here, but shall not be so long." The rope was instantly lowered and the deceased caught hold of it and was being drawn up, when the rope broke, and she was not recovered alive. The deceased had been in a desponding way for some time, and had repeatedly threatened to do herself violence. Deceased was about 50 years of age.

She was buried on 13 November 1871 in Horsted Keynes, West Sussex, England.¹¹¹
