A letter dated 1855 from his mother Anne to brother George Edwin, mentioned that James' father had made his will which did not include James, but that if he stopped drinking, a codicil would be added to the will whereby he also would inherit. It would appear that this was too late as within 6 months James was dead. James was an enumerator for the 1851 census.

Mrs Elizabeth BLABER, a widow, residing at Horsted Keynes, jumped down a well on Tuesday morning about 6 o'clock. Her daughter-in-law having missed her, and seeing the well lid open, ran to it and called out. The old lady answered, "I am here, but shall not be so long." The rope was instantly lowered and the deceased caught hold of it and was being drawn up, when the rope broke, and she was not recovered alive. The deceased had been in a desponding way for some time, and had repeatedly threatened to do herself violence. Deceased was about 50 years of age.
