At Haywards Heath County Court last Tuesday George BLABER, outside railway porter, Burgess Hill, made an application under the Increase of Rent Act, 1920, to suspend the increase of rent until the cottage he occupies in Fairfield Road is put into a reasonable state of repair. Mr S YOUNG, Burgess Hill, said he collected the rent for the owner, and his point was that the applicant had never paid any increased rent except in respect to increased rates [JAB: rates are a form of local council tax to cover sewerage, water, rubbish collections etc in UK]. The repairs were now being done. His Honour said that the applicant must pay increases of rent due to increases of rates, but any increases in respect of repairs should not be paid until the repairs were finished. George and Mary1461 lived at Adelaide Cottages, 159 Station Road in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, England in 1928.1460,1465 From The Mid-Sussex Times - Tuesday, 21st February, 1928. FORCED TO "CHAR" BURGESS HILL. George H BLABER, Southampton, was summoned for failing to maintain his wife and child. Mr G F COLEMAN appeared for the wife, Mary J BLABER, of Adelaide Cottages, Burgess Hill. He stated that the marriage took place on December 30, 1914, and there was one child - a boy of eleven. The only home applicant had had was at Brighton, where she and he husband lived from 1920 until 1923. Defendant afterwards became manager of a butcher's shop in London at £8 a week, and in 1925 he went to Southampton, where he secured a post at £5 a week and commission. He had not provided a home for applicant at Southampton, and had only sent her sums of money from time to time, the payments being irregular. The husband's trouble was that he drank and lost his money gambling. Mr COLEMAN then read a letter from defendant, who said "The only thing I seem to be successsful in is work." Defendant earned good money, continued Mr COLEMAN, but he was always trying to make more by gambling, with the result that he lost it and there was none for his wife. She had to support herself by charing, and there were ladies in Burgess Hill who had been good to her, supplying her with food and money. When a man was earning good money like defendant was it was not right that his wife should have to live to an extent on the charity of other people. - Applicant then gave evidence, in the course of which she said her husband went to France on active service in 1915, and left the Army in 1918. Since he had been in Southampton defendant had promised to provide her with a home, but had not done so. His excuse was that he could not get rooms. She had not received any money from him since January 5, when he sent her £1 10s. She earned about 15s. a week charing, and paid 10s. rent. She had received money from her brother and sister. - In his absence defendant was ordered to contribute £2 a week towards the maintenance of his wife, and 10s. a week for the boy. He was also ordered to pay one guinea towards the solicitor's fees and 9s. costs.
