"BLABER William

Report from ARGUS dated April 11th 1900, and reprinted in October 1961

ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME FOR STEYNING MAN
William Blaber, a member of the gun's crew of H.M.S. 'Powerful,' one of the Naval Brigade shut up in Ladysmith, returned to his home in Steyning last night, arriving by the 10.45 train. The first intimation that he would arrive that evening was received by his father in the form of a telegram, which reached Steyning about nine o'clock. Owing to the lateness of the hour and the short notice, the organised reception which it had been intended to accord him had to be abandoned. As it was, however, the members of the Steyning Town Band turned out in full force, under Bandmaster W. Moody, and marched down to the station to await the arrival of the train. A crowd of some 150 persons filled the up-platform, and a considerable crowd awaited outside. As the train came into the station loud cheers were given for Sir George White and the Naval Brigade, the Band playing the appropriate quick march, 'Return.' The moment Blaber was seen the greatest excitement prevailed, and he was seized and shaken hands with by everybody who could get within reach, while the crowd cheered continuously. He was then mounted shoulder high, and carried up from the station followed by the band playing 'The Red, White and Blue,' and the crowd, as far as the Norfolk Hotel, where the Band gave 'Auld Lang Syne,' and the National Anthem. Then followed a tremendous amount of cheering, after which, the hero of the hour returned to his home, from which he had been absent so long, in company with his father; and the crowd disappeared quietly. It was noticed by many that Blaber looked fatigued and worn, a state of things hardly to be wondered at considering the terrible trials through which he had been."

At the 1911 Census, he was a Stoker, still in the Royal Navy.

He lived at 29 Charlton Street in Steyning, West Sussex, England in 1911.1478 He died on 15 January 1930 at the age of 51 in Brighton, East Sussex, England.1479,1480 See his father, Henry, for inscription on grave headstone.
