What is a GEDCOM file? GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication, and was developed as a standard for exchanging computerised genealogical data. Most genealogical software programs can import and export GEDCOM files. This makes it easy to exchange and share information with relatives and others. However, not all genealogy software programs are equal, and some data (sometimes, quite important data) can be lost when exporting/importing GEDCOM files.
