18. Charlotte BLABER4,201 was born about 1828 in Westham, East Sussex, England.202,203 She was christened on 11 May 1828 in Westham, East Sussex, England.204 She lived at Glynley Cottages in Westham, East Sussex, England in 1841.205 Charlotte lived at Priest House in Westham, East Sussex, England in 1851.56 At the 1851 census, Charlotte was lodging with her father, with her two daughters. She was recorded as a widow, so she had not yet married her late husband's brother, George WEYMARK. Charlotte was described as a Pauper.
She lived at Milton Street Farm in Arlington, East Sussex, England in 1861.65 She lived at the Lunatic Asylum in Lewes, East Sussex, England in 1875.206 Charlotte was committed to the Lunatic Asylum after her husband, George, ran off in 1875.
Charlotte died of disease of the heart and brain on 19 March 1878 at the age of 50 in Woodsfield, East Sussex, England.8,207 Medical: It seems that poor Charlotte finally cracked. Having lost one husband at an early age and being saddled with two young children, she took up with her brother-in-law.
Charlotte was admitted as a pauper patient to the Sussex Lunatic Asylum in Haywards Heath on 21 June 1875. She had previously been at the Eastbourne Union Workhouse. She was suffering from Melancholia due to domestic trouble. She died almost three years later of "disease of the heart and brain" aged 49.
What really caused her break down and later death at a relatively early age? Times were hard in those days in rural Sussex. Labourers' wages were low where they could find work, food prices were kept artificially high by the Corn Laws until they were repealed. Charlotte had already lost one husband, being left with two young daughters. She took up with George, her brother-in-law, but they could not marry because of the law at that time. They had several children, the first born dying at he young age of 22, of TB, in the Workhouse. George seemed to have disappeared. What made Charlotte crack? Sheer mental exhaustion as well as physical? Years of work and want? The menopause? Her "husband" ?

Charlotte BLABER and George WEYMARK were married about 1851.4,204 Charlotte was still a widow at the 1851 census. Charlotte and George may not actually have officially married as it was possibly illegal at that time to marry one's brother-in-law.
