THE DWELLINGS OF THE POOR.
We recommend the following case to the serious consideration of the practical philanthropists of this town. It discloses facts which are painful in the extreme. - On Friday afternoon Mr Coroner Browne held an inquest in Narrow Marsh touching the death of Eliza BLABER, an infant. - Samuel BLABER father of the deceased, living in Lees Yard, Narrow Marsh, said that the child had had very good health generally until Thursday morning, when it did not seem quite so well, and he thought it was her teeth; but when he came home at 12 o'clock the child was dead. There were three rooms in the house, and he and his family occupied one of them. Mrs REED, who let him the room, together with her husband and five children, occupied the other two rooms. He gave the child teething powder the night before it died. He had had the room about a week. - Mrs REED said that she lived in Lees Yard, Narrow Marsh. These people occupied one room in her house. She should never have let them the room but they came one night late and asked her if she could let them have one, as they could not get a house, and accordingly she let them have the room. On Thursday morning as Mrs BLABER was washing the child she heard her scream out, and say that the child was dying. Witness went to her and took the child from her, and found that it was in a fit, and convulsed. She laid it on her knee, and afterwards upon the bed, but it died in half-an-hour afterwards. Witness occupied the other two rooms, but since her children had been ill she always slept down stairs in the house-place, and kept the fire in all night, as her children were so bad, two of them having the scarlet fever, and another one some other complaint. - William Frederick LILL, surgeon, said that he had attended Mrs REED's children. The room down stairs where she had lately slept did not contain sufficient air for one healthy person. He said there was about 8.00 cubic feet of air, and the proper quantity for sick persons is 1,500 cubic feet, the same quantity that is allowed in the London hospitals. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that death had ensued through the impure air of an overcrowded house.

Eliza was buried on 3 April 1870 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.2067

He died at 16 Trumpet Street on 31 July 1875 at the age of 1 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.118,2072 He was buried on 3 August 1875 at St Mary's Church in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.2071,2073 Sabina gives her maiden name as JACKSON on William's birth certificate(?).

Samuel Benjamin BLABER and Mabel WEATHERALL were married on 17 July 1859 in Halifax Chapel, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.732,2074,2075 Samuel gave his age as 20, but he was in fact only 16 at his marriage to Mabel. They732,2074,2075 were separated about 1863.2076,2077 From The Times dated July 22nd 1872 as follows.
Midland Circuit Nottingham July 19th.
Crown Court (before Mr Justice Blackburn)
John Noon was indicted for wounding Mabel Blaber with intent to murder her and with intent to do grievous bodily harm, at Nottingham on the 24th May last.
Mr Saint appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Lawrence for the defence.
The prosecutrix was a married woman, but has been living apart from her husband for nine years.
She has since been living with the prisoner as his wife, and he had left her shortly before the present occurrence.
On the 23rd May the prisoner came to her and asked her to let him live with her again, but she refused.
He then followed her about the town for two hours, and finally went to her house and started to break the furniture and to strike her.
She screamed, when the neighbours and police came in, and he went away.
At 5 o'clock the next morning the prosecutrix was in bed when the prisoner came in and said "If you will have somebody else I will stab you to the heart".
He then took a knife out of his pocket and opened it.
She seized him by the hair, he seized her by the hair, and they both fell on the floor fighting.
He stuck her with the knife on the left side of her neck, inflicting an inch and a half wound in length and a quarter of an inch in depth.
The woman stated that the prisoner was very drunk, and that she had had some drink herself, and could not remember what occurred.
She said "I don't think, Sir, he meant doing it."
The prisoner said before the magistrates, "I am sorry for what I have done; I shall never do it again."
Mr Lawrence, for the defence, contended that the intents laid in the indictment were not proved, but he could not resist a verdict of unlawful wounding.
His Lordship, having clearly pointed out to the jury the different verdicts they could find, said that even if the prisoner was drunk he would be guilty of an unlawful wound, but if he was so drunk as not to be able to form any intent the jury would say so.
The jury found him guilty of unlawful wounding.
His Lordship, in passing sentence, said he supposed the jury thought the prisoner was too drunk to know what he was about.
However, there were circumstances that made this an aggravated offence.
He had used a knife, it was a woman whom he had stabbed, and he had stabbed her in the throat.
He was sentenced to 18 months hard labour.
His Lordship, then took causes, having disposed of the criminal business.

She was already living apart from Samuel Blaber at the 1861 census.
Mabel WEATHERALL2074 was born about 1842 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.2078,2079 She lived at 13 Earl Street in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1861.2077 At the 1861 census, she was living with Jeremiah and Elizabeth Shelton and family, in the same street as her husband Samuel Blaber. In 1861 she was a Lace Clipper.2077 Mabel lived at 34 Pipe Street in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1871.2080 At the 1871 census, Mabel is using her maiden name 'Weatherall'.
