On enlisting, he gave his age as 17. Attested on 10th December 1829. His rank was Private, number 335. He served 14 years 191 days in India, although he must have been in Ireland for the birth of his son William in 1834, and daughter Sarah in 1836. He was in Bangalore in 1845 for the birth and baptism of his son Abraham. Discharged as medically unfit at the age of 40 at Exeter barracks. Between 1834 and 1850 William was a soldier with the 15th King's Regiment of Hussars.^{706,708,709,710,711,712,713,714,715,716,717,718} He lived at District Barracks, Pillgwenlly in St Woollos, Monmouthshire, Wales in 1841.⁷¹⁹ He was a Corporal at the 1841 Census. In 1856 he was a Labourer.⁷²⁰ Between 1861 and 1881 William was a Groom.^721,722,723 In 1861 Census he was stated to be a 'Pensioner Groom'. He lived at 7 Thoroughfare Yard in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1881.⁷²¹ Living with his son, Horatio and family. He lived at 4 Marriotts Row in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England on 5 April 1891.⁷²⁴ Living with son Horatio and family. William died about June 1891 at the age of 78 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.⁷²⁵ There is some confusion with this family. It may be a combination of two families with different William and Eliza as Parents. Some sources (e.g., George Moore) give William's place of birth as Weedon Barracks, Northamptonshire, the 1881 census gives his place of birth as Nottinghamshire, and the 1871 census gives it as Lewes, Sussex.

William and Eliza⁷⁰⁷ lived at 11 Carter Place in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1871.⁷²³ Their daughter Eliza and husband Francis CROWE were living with them at the 1871 Census, together with Joseph's wife Jane BLABER.

Eliza lived at 4 Marriotts Row in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1891.⁷²⁹ She died on 23 August 1900 at the age of 83 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.⁷³⁰ She was also known as Elizabeth.⁷³⁰
